  • Are you Interested in Participating in a Local Farm Share Delivery?
    January 22, 2015 | 0 comments

For the past several years, my family has participated in the farm share provided by Persephone Market Garden.  It is a great way to receive high quality produce that is grown locally without any chemical pesticides.  From May until October, we have enjoyed receiving a weekly delivery of freshly grown vegetables and herbs (and sometimes fruit too).  Persephone Market Garden runs on the Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) model, where participants pay for the produce in 3 installments throughout the year (on signing up, in June and again in September).  This helps the farmers have some reliable income to help them throughout the growing season.  Each week, we enjoyed receiving a newsletter with recipes for that weeks food.  I have just signed up for the 2015 season.  Have a look at their website for more information and to sign up.

  • The Importance of Play
    January 14, 2015 | 0 comments

I love this article that was sent to me by our psychotherapist, Catharine Crawford!  It talks about the importance of "play" to our sense of wellbeing.  In order to be happy, we have to have fun in our lives and connect with others.  It is easy to worry too much about being productive, busy and efficient, and forget about doing something just for the sake of enjoyment.  Having 3 young children, I have the opportunity to play with them every day, but I often get frustrated that it stops me from "getting things done" - this article reminded me about how much I can learn from watching them.  Click this link and let me know what you think.  Be sure to watch the video - it warmed my heart:)

Did you know that Maple Shores Health Centre has several healthy gift options to help you with your Christmas shopping?  Here are some ideas:

We have some cookbooks for sale that offer a variety of healthy, simple (this is key!) recipes.

    • Delicous Detox is written by Canadian naturopathic doctor, Carol Zawada, who put together 80 delicious recipes that can be used while on a detox (she details how they can be incorporated into a 3 week detox plan in the book) or for everyday eating.  Several of the recipes are used regularly in my kitchen.  Cost is $25 + GST.
    • Whole Life Nutrition provides information on the importance of living a whole foods lifestyle, and how to transition into one.  It contains over 200 recipes, many of which are gluten free, dairy free, soy free and egg free.  A great kitchen bible for healthy eating.  Cost is $30 + GST.

    Some book ideas include:

    • Tony Kaake has brought in his favourite book, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.  This book is a short yet powerful book that contains useful advice about how to recognize self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy.   The four agreements are these: Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. The book describes how and why we should live according to these agreements. Cost is $22 + GST.
    • TLC for the Body, Mind and Soul - a book by Canadian author, Robert Ridpath.  This book contains simple, yet powerful solutions that empower you to get to the root causes of poor sleep, low energy, hormonal imbalance, chronic pain, and many other contributors to chronic illness.  Cost is $15 + GST.

We also have a variety of personal care products that are hypoallergenic and made without any commonly used harsh ingredients.  These products include Manuka cream (a wonderful healing salve), carrot soap, shampoo, conditioner, and bath salts.

Gift certificates for massage and naturopathic visits are available by request as well.

You can contact the office, if you would like something set aside for you to pick up.  Happy Shopping and Happy Holidays!

  • Thirteen Things Successful People do in the First Ten Minutes of their Day
    October 25, 2014 | 2 comments

Like many other people, my life is often organized chaos these days.  As a mom to three small children, a wife, and a business owner, I have come to realize that my "To Do" list is never totally complete, it is very challenging to fit in any time for me, and that there is no such thing as "balance".  What I try to do is make the most productive use of the time that I do have, and prioritize what needs to be accomplished when...sometimes with more success than at others.

Catharine, the psychotherapist and counsellor in our office, passed on this article to me and I found it directly relates to this.  Check out the article entitled, “Thirteen things successful people do in the first 10 minutes of the work day”,  from the Financial Post October 10, 2014.  This article posts 13 practical tips from a survey of success stories in the world of work.  Notice that taking time at the beginning of your day to be present, practice self-care, pause, and plan your day strategically can boost your productivity and wellness quotient!

I would love to hear your thoughts,

    Dr. Jennifer
