Does this sound familiar? It’s 2am and you’re awake. What is going on? You look at the clock and start counting down to your alarm. Looks like another day attached to the coffee pot. You know you can’t keep going like this but you don’t know what to do anymore. You’ve tried melatonin, and you keep getting sick. You’re stuck in this never-ending cycle of being exhausted but not able to actually sleep. In 2017, Stats Canada found that 40 percent of Canadians have a sleeping disorder, of which insomnia was the most common. Insomnia is defined as difficulty falling or staying asleep. Over time, this lack of sleep can increase one’s risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression, to name a few. Sleep is when the body repairs itself and lays down new memories/information. Specifically, this happens during the deepest stage, also known as REM (rapid eye movement). Of the four stages of sleep, we spend more time in REM as our sleep progresses. Every time we wake up, we typically start back at light sleep and move back down into REM sleep. This means the more times we wake up, the less overall time we are able to spend in REM. While melatonin may have worked well for your friend, it may not work for you. You are a unique and complex person and my job as a Naturopathic Doctor is to honour that and work with you to figure out what the most likely culprit is affecting your sleep. There are many factors that can affect one’s sleep, so trying to figure it all out on your own can be overwhelming, exhausting and expensive! You are not alone. Let’s talk.
